Legalized Sports Betting in the United States

With the proliferation of different sports betting options – from conventional bookmakers to sports betting exchange – what is the legal landscape for online betting? While all U.S. states recognize the legality of sports betting, the legal landscape varies from one state to the next. While some states allow internet-based gambling, others still require bets to only be placed in-person at a licensed gambling establishment. There are also legal constraints in place in order to make sure that online gamblers are within state lines when placing bets through mobile devices.

Currently, there are no federal laws or jurisdictions that legalizing sports betting; however, the trend is slowly starting to shift. In fact, there have been attempts by the NCAA and other conferences to legalize sports betting in past years, but these efforts were unsuccessful. The NCAA, unlike the NBA and NFL, has limited its involvement in online sports betting. The Big 12 Conference and Southeastern Conference have taken similar stances on the issue, despite the fact that they have television broadcasts of games involving their conference members. This may indicate that the trend towards legalized sports betting among college athletes is only a matter of time.

If legalized sports betting becomes a reality, there will be significant industry growth. However, many questions remain about how it will affect the U.S. sports betting industry, as well as the legal landscape of online sports betting sites. Online gambling sites have begun to offer sports betting options to more locations, including locations outside of the U.S., which will create new business opportunities for sports betting brokers and companies. The popularity of these online sports betting apps is growing, however; especially given that there are many millions of Americans who use these devices to access the popular online gambling websites. While legalized sports betting remains a distant dream, the trend is changing and it appears that the future of U.S. based sports betting looks bright.
